Henry L. and Caroline H. Ballou diaries, 1883-1945.

This collection contains the diaries of Henry L. Ballou, a Congregational minister, and his wife, Carrie H. Ballou, of Chester, Vermont, during the period 1883 to 1945. There are 53 volumes of diaries kept by Henry, 1883-1884, 1886, 1889-1891, and 1900-1945, one account book for the period 1893-1895, and ten volumes of Caroline Hubbard Ballou diaries, 1930, 1933, 1938-1945. Henry Ballou's early diaries show a man whose whole life revolves around the church, officiating at funerals and weddings, prayer meetings, and visiting parishioners. As the years pass, he also mentioned tennis and golf in his diaries, carefully listing scores and who he played with. He also became very involved with the Masons, and in town affairs, acting as town moderator, serving on the school board, spending two years in the House and two in the Senate, and becoming involved in the local bank. Henry's diaries also list the books he has read that year, and later, the movies he has seen. He records some financial information at the back of each diary, and often records totals for his pastoral activities. Early on finances were a concern, and he keeps records in the diaries of some of his earnings, expenses for his children in college, and often includes entries on the stock he was buying. After he became active in the bank, he wrote of the bank stock dividends. His diaries also mention his travel and the cars he owned. Carrie's diaries also include what she was reading. She speaks of her activities as home maker, and includes some recipes in the back of a few diaries. She does a good deal of typing, usually including Henry's sermons. During the war, she was active with the Red Cross, preparing dressings. Throughout her life, she was active in church affairs, helping to prepare church suppers, going with Henry on parishioner visits, etc.
